Her body seemed to like the changes she was making because she claimed she had a lot more energy, and her Doctors told her to keep up the good work. Progress is good!  Unfortunately this is not a turnaround story. She didn’t heal herself. She didn’t reverse anything. She does have more energy, but I'm convinced  had she started eating better earlier in her life, her health would be better today. Of course, I don't know that for certain but I don't have any of the conditions she has, and I am supposedly predisposed to some of them.

Where am I going with this?  Well, I believe Food is Medicine. Food can heal, and it can also prevent. Lifestyle (including diet) plays a big role when it comes to long term health.
That thinking is beginning to play out in the medical profession.  There is a Food as Medicine movement going on right now in the healthcare field. Buffalo has joined this movement and next week, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus is hosting a Food as Medicine Symposium. A few of the nation’s top medical experts will meet with WNY professionals from a variety of disciplines to discuss how nutrition can improve medical outcomes.  YES!

One of the goals of this movement is for millions of patients suffering from chronic diseases to be treated in a more holistic way, where food can be prescribed by their medical team.  In fact, NYS is working on a waiver to the Medicaid program that would allow just that. How fantastic is that?  Produce prescriptions and medically tailored meals can potentially be covered for those on Medicaid insurance!

What a huge win.  I can't wait for the day where standard practice is for medical teams to discuss nutrition with their patients and tell them they have more control then they think when it comes to their overall health.  Many medical professionals do, but from what I've seen with my mother, it's the exception and not the rule.

This is a topic near and dear to everyone here at FreshFix.  We all believe everyone should have access to fresh, healthy food and this movement is helping us get closer to that goal.  Our own Lucia, Co-Founder of FreshFIx will moderate one of the panel discussions next week.
