Blueberries, Organic (Qt)

$14.00

1 quart

Blueberries are at the peak of freshness from July through September in Western New York. Not only are they at their highest quality, but you'll also agree that these gem-colored fruits just taste better when they are locally sourced.

Organic Blueberries.  1 Qt.

Blueberries are one of the few fruits native to North America. Native Americans once called them “star berries” because the five points of blueberry blossoms make a star shape. During the Civil War, blueberries were packaged and shipped to the Union troops for use as a food staple.

Abers Acres

Since 1984, Sue and John Abers have been dedicated to the production of pick-your-own and ready-picked choice seasonal fruits and vegetables. “I grew up on a dairy farm and my husband married the farmer’s daughter,” Abers said. The couple wanted to do something on their own and started growing nursery crops. “We planted a field of strawberries, which was really successful, and grew the business from there. People out here were hungry for it.”

By 1990, that hunger allowed the Abers to add a second location about two miles away from their home farm in Kennedy, NY. The produce grown at Abers Acres are USDA Certified Organic

Abers supplies FreshFix with most of our organic offerings including tomatoes, corn, berries, melons, squash, cucumber and popcorn.

The Abers son, Adam is responsible for the farm’s certified organic status which has helped the Abers’ earn grants to improve infrastructure including a new state-of-the-art irrigation system. Over four years, starting in 2000, he developed a new management system including sustainable practices like cover crop rotation and other biological controls. The result is high quality, flavorful, and nutrient-dense fruit and vegetables.

Abers Acres was one of our first Farm Partners. “Joshua reached out to us for organic produce pretty early on,” Abers recalled. “I liked that he wanted to promote local and organic, especially since the large grocers don’t really seem to care or want to make the investment in organic products.”

Storage & Preparation
As with most types of berries, it is best to eat blueberries as soon as possible. Blueberries will store well in the fridge if you can’t eat them immediately. Place them in a covered container and store in your vegetable crisper where the humidity is high and will prevent the blue-berries from drying out. Be sure to remove any mushy or moldy blue-berries before putting them in the fridge.

When you are ready to use, gently swish berries under water in a colander and then allow the berries to drain.

Blueberries contain more antioxidants than most other fruits or vegetables. Increased intake of antioxidants has been linked to a decreased risk of cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.
