The Bagel Jar
The Bagel Jar was born in 2020 out of a simple frustration — John and Morgan Popple couldn't find a fresh bagel anywhere in Buffalo's Southtowns. John, an architect, and Morgan, a high school computer science teacher, had long dreamed of starting a business together. After falling in love with making homemade bagels, they decided to turn that passion into something more.
They launched at the Hamburg Farmers Market in August 2020 and immediately sold out. Demand quickly outgrew their home kitchen, leading them to a shared commercial space at the Broadway Market, where they refined their craft and began selling year-round. In 2021, a partnership with Public Espresso + Coffee on Seneca Street allowed them to scale further and offer fresh bagels daily.
By January 2023, John and Morgan opened their first storefront in Derby, NY, expanding into sandwiches and handcrafted espresso drinks — and were met with an overwhelming wave of community support. In September 2024, they brought The Bagel Jar back to its roots, opening a second location in the Village of Hamburg, the town that first fell in love with their bagels.
